Bee'cause I made a start...

 September 16, 2020

After many weeks of self-study, I finally decided to actualize one of my dreams which I had nurtured since childhood.

I was a member of the school bee club and had taken few lessons on bees. With my dad teaching in the same school, I grew up in the teacher’s quarters. There were nine houses in a row and in house #9 stayed the bee club instructor – Mr Leo. I grew up watching him take care of his 8 bee boxes and my fascination grew wings.

Now working and settled down in Bangalore with a family of my own, I set out to realize my childhood dream – being a beekeeper. I realized from beekeepers that raising bees is very rewarding. I am on that journey.

Self-study:

If you wish to be a beekeeper (commercial or just a hobbyist), learn as much as you can before buying a bee box. The initiate fear of a bee sting is natural. You’ll get over it after the initial phase. Here are few of the sources to learn from

·        Watch youtube videos

·         Take a good udemy course. I took one on discount for Rs 450. Here is the link - https://www.udemy.com/share/102tlcAEAZcV1TR3oB/

·         Connect with a bee keeper. You will find them on Facebook.

·         Join Facebook groups of bee enthusiasts

·         Visit a bee farm or a bee hobbyist and learn from their experience

Stingy Truths:

·         If you are allergic to bee venom, bee keeping may not be your thing, so just enjoy the honey!

·         Your neighbours may be unhappy when they know you have bees! Awareness is the key. Educate them on the benefits of bees and how bees generally mind their own business if we mind ours.
